چکیده

In a parametric statistical model, a function of the data is said to be ancillary if its distribution does not depend on the parameters in the model. The concept of ancillary statistics is one of R. A. Fisher’s fundamental contributions to statistical inference. Fisher motivated the principle of conditioning on ancillary statistics by an argument based on relevant subsets, and by a closely related argument on recovery of information. Conditioning can also be used to reduce the dimension of the data to that of the parameter of interest, and conditioning on ancillary statistics ensures that no information about the parameter is lost in this reduction. The present review article is an attempt to illustrate various aspects of the use of ancillarity in statistical inference. Both exact and asymptotic theory are considered. Without any claim of completeness, we have made a modest attempt to crystalize many of the basic ideas in the literature.

Status of ancillary services in the children section of public libraries and its relationship with loyalty of children aged 7-11 years in Khuzestan province, Iran

The aim of this study was to investigate the status of ancillary services in the children section of public libraries in Khuzestan province and its relationship with the loyalty of children aged 7-11 years. The research method used was mixed (qualitative and quantitative) and included a combined mode. The  qualitative part of the research referenced public libraries of Khuzestan province and th...

Using Ancillary Statistics in On-line Learning Algorithms

| Neural networks are usually curved statistical models. They do not have nite dimensional suucient statistics, so on-line learning on the model itself inevitably loses information. In this paper we propose a new scheme for training curved models, inspired by the ideas of ancillary statistics and adaptive critics. At each point estimate an auxiliary at model (exponential family) is built to loc...

Incorporation of ancillary information derived from satellite images applied on environmental variables evaluation

Geostatistical models for spatial prediction are based on observations points. When ancillary information related to the target variable is available, it can be used to improve the estimations. Some sources of information, like satellite images or digital elevation models, provide full information for the whole study area, improving even more the point estimation. It is useful when the target v...

Finite sample inference for extreme value distributions

We consider the problem of small sample inference for the generalised extreme value distribution. In particular, we show the existence of approximate and exact ancillary statistics for this distribution and that small sample likelihood based inference is greatly improved by conditioning on these statistics. Ignoring the ancillary statistics in inference can have severe consequences in some stan...

Simple and accurate one-sided inference from signed roots of likelihood ratios

The authors propose two methods based on the signed root of the likelihood ratio statistic for one-sided testing of a simple null hypothesis about a scalar parameter in the presence of nuisance parameters. Both methods are third-order accurate and utilise simulation to avoid the need for onerous analytical calculations characteristic of competing saddlepoint procedures. Moreover, the new method...
